Hello, my name is Kathleen Rodgers and I am the Chairperson for the NHPMHS REFLECTIONS Program. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this, the Reflections program is a National PTA Cornerstone Arts program that was developed in 1969 and is still going strong today. The primary purpose of this program is to encourage ALL of our students to look inside themselves for the hidden(and the not so hidden) talents that lie within each of them and give them an avenue to express their talents in a variety of ways.
Each year the students (up to and including 12th grade) are invited to bring alive the current Reflections theme through Literature, Photography, Visual Arts, Dance Choreography, Music Composition and/or Film Production. Students are welcome to submit entries into more than one category, if desired. Upon completion of their entry the students will submit them to the PTA Reflections Committee (more on this as deadline approaches) where they will be judged locally against NHP entries only. From there, winners can advance to Nassau Regionals, NYS finals and National levels.
The theme for this year’s 2016-2017 Reflections is “What is your story?” What a great topic this is as it is open to individual interpretation. So, get creative and use those artistic talents to inspire others to get involved in the arts as well.
As a proud Gladiator parent, I walk down the hallways of our children’s school and I am thrilled at the artwork hanging throughout. If I didn’t know any better, I would never think that some of the pictures or writings belong to Junior and Senior High School students. Yes, it is that good. Check it out for yourself one day. Why keep all that talent hidden away for only us to see? Let’s encourage each and every one of our 7 – 12th graders to seriously consider submitting an entry (or two) into the Reflections Program this year. Let’s take Nassau County by storm and then go for the Nationals and let everyone enjoy the talent that we are so lucky to have in our midst.
The student’s entries must be their ORIGINAL work (but note that they can get minor assistive help from adults, ex: parents; art or music teacher, etc). You can find the guidelines for entries on this websites attached links (they will take you directly to the NYS PTA website). Detailed guidelines for entries can also be located directly on the New York State PTA Website by clicking the following link: http://www.nyspta.org/YourPTA/YourPTA_Reflections.cfm. All students that submit entries for judging will receive recognition at an awards ceremony. In addition, all of their creative work will be placed on display for all to view.
This year’s student deadline for submitting Reflections entries for the initial judging on local level is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2016 . If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at 804-928-1150 (cell) or email me at PROLIFE1967@GMAIL.COM(Please put REFLECTIONS in Subject field or it will go to spam). I am excited to see all the creative interpretations that our talented student body submits.
